zzzzzzzz 0002 Connecticut Gets A Jump On Fall Travel, Colorfully Funny Picture

Just as summer blazes to an end, fall is right around the corner. In Connecticut, fall seems to come a bit earlier than other parts of the country, offering travelers some unique places, events and festivals to usher in cooler weather. Featuring, front and center, the state’s legendary fall leaf sightings, other fall activities include adventurous tree climbing and zip lining or trips down the ever popular Connecticut Wine Trail. Here are five fall events unique to Connecticut.

Gillette Castle State Park
features wooded hiking trails and plenty of places overlooking the woods to see all the colors of the autumn season. The patio at the castle offers a view of the lower Connecticut River Valley featuring a spectacular array of color.

Essex Steam Train and Riverboat has a fall foliage package that includes a two-and-a-half-hour steam train and riverboat ride through the Connecticut River Valley. Guests will enjoy a bursting array of red, orange, yellow and gold foliage as they tour the countryside and the Connecticut River.

Ice Fall Off Ghost Glacier Closes Trails At Jasper National Park

Posted on 23 August 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

On August 10, 2012, tons of ice fell off Canada’s Ghost Glacier on Mount Edith Cavell in Jasper National Park. The massive avalanche, which accounted for 50% to 60% of the glacier, fell into Cavell Pond at the base of the mountain, causing a mini-tsunami that flooded the area.

On the Jasper National Park Facebook page, they have stated, “Visitor safety is Parks Canada’s primary concern at this time. The 14 km Cavell Road is closed from its intersection with highway 93A to Mt. Edith Cavell, until the safety conditions in the area have been thoroughly assessed.
Access to the area trails, picnic areas, and Mt. Edith Cavell Hostel, will not be possible during this time.”

According to news.com.au, no one was injured.

One person caught the icefall on video, which you can see above. You can also click here to see photos.

MUJI To Open First West Coast Store In San Francisco This Fall

muji jm MUJI To Open First West Coast Store In San Francisco This Fall Funny PictureCalifornia design junkies rejoice: Japanese retailer MUJI recently announced that it will open its first West Coast location in San Francisco‘s SOMA district this fall. With 7,250 square feet of retail space, the new store will be the fifth and largest MUJI location in the United States.

MUJI has developed a cult following in the design community for producing simple, functional lifestyle items that are high on quality and low in price. The MUJI retail environment mirrors this streamlined approach, with spare design, soft lighting and Zen music in each of the chain’s four New York City locations.

While the store sells everything from notebooks to frying pans to organic cotton T-shirts, travelers will be especially pleased to find a wide range of well-designed travel accessories. The store’s assortment of bags, pouches, cases, bottles, containers and dividers will revolutionize the way you pack, as well as introduce a touch of Japanese simplicity into your travel experience.

fallleaves jm Photo Of The Day: Early Fall In Italy Funny Picture

This summer’s weather patterns continue to astound me, between heat waves, hailstorms and the mighty Derecho, which was said to be the storm to end all storms before it narrowly missed New York City last week.

Today’s Photo of the Day is proof of even more global weirding: leaves changing color in Italy … IN JULY. As Flickr user Aviv reports from Venice, “One day it’s too hot to be outside, the other day it’s windy and leaves are falling.” Yup, sounds like my summer too.

Have you captured any photos of summer abnormalities lately? Upload your travel shots to the Gadling Flickr Pool and your image could be selected as our Photo of the Day.

Supersonic Free Fall From Edge Of Space One Step Closer

The exact date for Felix Baumgartner’s supersonic free fall from the edge of space is not yet scheduled. But this week, the Austrian daredevil jumped from 18 miles above the planet, coming one step closer to setting the record for the world’s highest skydive.

Baumgartner, an expert skydiver who started jumping at age 16, hopes to become the first human to break the sound barrier without a plane. To do that, he will have to set a world record 125,000-foot dive (that’s 23 miles) armed with gear that will slow him down and keep him alive during the nearly six minute free fall.

Part of a Red Bull-sponsored event, Baumgartner’s 60-pound parachute system includes a main chute, an emergency backup and an oxygen system. Should he go spinning out of control, a stabilizing drogue, also along for the ride, will be deployed.

Anthony Bourdain’s ‘The Layover’ Shoots In Seattle, Airs This Fall

Posted on 11 July 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

anthonybourdainlaurelmillercheesefordummies 2 1600x1200 Anthony Bourdains The Layover Shoots In Seattle, Airs This Fall Funny PictureThe term “bucket list” annoys me for myriad reasons, but there’s something to be said about kicking it knowing you’ve achieved some of life’s ambitions.

Like most people, I have a plethora of death-defying outdoor activities I’d like to get to before I’m too old and creaky, but one of my more sedentary desires is listed on my Gadling bio. When asked whom I’d most like to interview, I answered (predictably, for a food and travel writer), “Anthony Bourdain.”

So when I found out Tony and his crew would be filming the Seattle episode of “The Layover” today at my former work – The Calf & Kid Artisan Cheese Shop – I nearly blew a gasket. I had the honor of being one of a handful informed of this tightly-kept state secret, and wanted a front row seat to watch my friend, mentor and former employer, Sheri LaVigne, provide Tony with a Pacific Northwest specialty cheese tasting.

The Calf & Kid is located in what I’ve come to consider Seattle’s crown jewel, Melrose Market. Housed in two renovated, vintage automobile repair shops in Capital Hill, it’s a small, carefully curated public market that also contains a localized butcher, a flower-and-produce shop, a home goods boutique, sandwich shop and one of the city’s finest restaurants, Sitka & Spruce.

It was a surprisingly low-key affair, and “The Layover” crew is top-notch: no attitude, no disruptions, no problem. They got things set up, and half an hour later, a very debonair and down-to-earth Bourdain strolled in. It was great fun watching Sheri – someone I’ve seen go from struggling small business owner to local hero – trading jokes and cheese samples with a high-profile person she really admires.
sherintony 1600x1200 Anthony Bourdains The Layover Shoots In Seattle, Airs This Fall Funny Picture
Of course, I needed photographic evidence of all of this. There was no time for me to do an interview, but Tony cheerfully indulged me with a photo, even when asked if I could pimp my new book, “Cheese for Dummies,” in it (“Not that I’m asking you to endorse it or anything,” to which he replied, “Hey, as long as you’re the one holding it.”). I thanked him for his time and talent, and told him I hope Seattle shows him a good time.

“It always does,” he said with a smile, and slipped out the door.

Look for the Seattle episode of “The Layover” to air in early fall on The Travel Channel.

280340454c328034af9 0001 Three Great Fall Food And Wine Festivals To Plan On Now Funny PictureAs summer heat bears down on much of America, thoughts might turn to fall, which brings food and wine festivals. Visiting some of them might require just a quick drive to experience. Others, much farther away, are good choices but require some advance planning. Here is a quick list with three of the more interesting fall festivals and events coming up this year.

Hawaii Food and Wine Festival- Oahu, Hawaii
Held in early September, the second annual Hawaii Food and Wine Festival features more than 50 internationally-renowned master chefs, culinary personalities, and wine and spirit producers. A Pacific Rim focus brings experts from the United States, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Philippines and Australia with showcase wine tastings, cooking demonstrations and exclusive dining opportunities with dishes using local produce, seafood, beef and poultry.

Held September 6-9, 2012, tickets on sale now also include a 12-month subscription to Food and Wine Magazine.

Lake Tahoe Autumn Food & Wine Festival
- Lake Tahoe, California
Eight days long, this year’s event kicks off on Labor Day weekend and continues all week with a grape stomp, classes, tastings, music, art, wine and a grand finale featuring a Culinary Competition and Grand Tasting at Northstar California Resort. Unique to this event is the opportunity to visit a farmers market with a renowned chef to learn about fall seasonal produce, meat, fish, cheese and flowers.

Happening September 1-9, 2012, tickets are on sale now.

On my feet: shoes & boots I’m wearing this fall

Posted on 28 October 2011 by Funny Picture Daily

Filed under:

tevamushfrio On my feet: shoes & boots Im wearing this fall Funny PictureFall is a sad time for feet. After months of fresh air, getting shown off in flip flops and enjoying their day(s) in the spotlight sun, it’s now time to cover them up for cold and inclement weather. Inspired by our very own Pam Mandel’s post on her favorite boots for the season, I thought I’d pass along some tips of my own by sharing with you what I’m wearing on my feet this fall. When it comes to footwear, style and fit are subjective, but I feel pretty comfortable recommending these shoes to you because they’ve kept me and my feet very happy.

Kickass Boots for Fall and Winter Travels

Posted on 28 October 2011 by Funny Picture Daily

Filed under:

fallboots Kickass Boots for Fall and Winter Travels Funny PictureI’m so not girly when it comes to style and I won’t wear heels, I just won’t. I don’t care how cute they are, I’m not running for a train or to the bus that’s pulling away from the stop while I’m wearing heels. No way. That doesn’t mean I don’t like cute shoes, I do, and I really like it when it comes to fall and I have an excuse for new winter boots.

Here’s the sacrifice I’ll make, given my boot fetish. Boots are heavy and they take up a lot of space in your bag. They’re a hassle in the airport, getting in and out of them in the security line is a drag. But if there’s bad weather — wet or cold conditions — I want my feet to be warm and dry. I’ll wear my boots on the plane or I’ll figure out how to get them in my bag. I can be really resourceful when it comes to packing. And often we’re on bad weather weekend getaways in the Pacific Northwest so I can just toss my boots in the car. That means I can take two pairs, if I’m so inclined.

Here are three styles I like this fall, all from different brands.

bogs Kickass Boots for Fall and Winter Travels Funny PictureI love my Bogs (picked up at hardware store in Forks, Washington). Whenever I wear them, I get compliments. And my feet are wildly happy in them. They’re comfortable, they keep my feet warm and dry, they are great for winter beach walks and stomping around in snow and just dealing with relentlessly wet city days. Adventure cruises often give you boots to use while you’re on board but I love these so much that I packed them for my trip to Antarctica. I was the only person who wasn’t crew that had their own boots. Crazy, maybe, but my cabin mate complained the whole time about her boots while I was at home in mine. It was totally worth the space and the weight. The boots I have list for 0 on the Bogs site, I paid about for mine. They come in a bunch of colors and patterns.

Key to Costa Rica offering 10% discount on Fall tours

Posted on 01 October 2011 by Funny Picture Daily

costa rica77 Key to Costa Rica offering 10% discount on Fall tours Funny PictureKey to Costa Rica is offering a 10% discount on tours going to Costa Rica now through November 30, 2011. The focus of these tours is eco-tourism, with itineraries being planned by green travel consultant Beatrice Blake who has not only lived in Costa Rica for 13 years, but has been advising travels since 1996. For those who may not be familiar with eco-tourism, it is a type of travel, usually to a protected or fragile area of land, that is low-impact on the Earth and is meant to educate travelers, provide money for ecological programs, and give insight into the culture.

Travelers have the option to create customized Costa Rican tours or choose from one of the Key to Costa Rica trips, such as Enchanting Costa Rica, which includes bird watching, hiking, visiting an organic coffee farm, and lodging in traditional-style thatched roof cabins. Trips include itineraries for active families, children, nature lovers, and bird enthusiasts. There are also tours specifically for those who want to experience Slow Travel as well as those wishing to volunteer in the region.
