Hotel News We Noted: August 25, 2012

rszhotelzaza 2 Hotel News We Noted: August 25, 2012 Funny PictureIt’s hard to believe summer is almost over! Next week, we’ll bring you a selection of great Labor Day getaways, but for now, we’re tracking this week’s industry news on Hotel News We Noted.

Hotel Package: Get In Touch With Your Inner Dinosaur at Hotel ZaZa
We’ve long wanted to stay at a Hotel Za Za (mostly just so we can say the name and feel very glamorous), but we also love the idea of an “art focused luxury hotel.” The ZaZa in Houston has partnered with the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s new Paleontology Hall for a “Texas Triassic Tour Package” with overnight accommodations, admission for two, dinner, valet parking and Internet for just 9, a discount of 40%. No bones about it, this sounds like a good deal.

Hotel Package: Fast Cars and Fancy Resorts in the Cayman Islands
Ever had a fantasy that you were a racecar driver? Here’s your chance – spend five nights relaxing at the luxe Cotton Tree Grand Cayman, a sponsor of the Blancpain European Sports Racing circuit. After you’ve gotten your fill of the Caribbean, fly to Spain for a two-day race in October, where you’ll get VIP treatment in the team’s pit. For ,500, this seems like a great deal for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Hot Hotels: In Memory of Marilyn
It’s the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death this month. If you’re a lover of the film icon, plan a stay at the historic Hotel del Coronado, the location for Monroe’s 1959 comedy, “Some Like It Hot.” Vacation like a star by staying at the ornate Victorian hotel where Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Monroe dazzled audiences in what is regarded as the number one comedy of all time by the American Film Institute.

Hotels in the Headlines: Taylor Swift Kicked Out of Fairmont Copley Plaza
Or so the rumors go. Apparently (according to the Daily Mail, anyway), Swift and beau, a member of the Kennedy clan, were attending a wedding of Conor Kennedy’s cousin and were politely asked to leave because Swift’s fame was causing a scene that upstaged the bride. Rumor has it that Swift was very polite, but returned again later that night to dance at the reception. What do you think? Was she wedding crashing in poor form or is the notoriously nice country singer just getting a bad rap for perhaps outshining the bride on her big day?

More US Hotels Are Now Charging For Internet: The Good News? Breakfast Is Often Free

Posted on 20 August 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

seattlemarriotthotellobby More US Hotels Are Now Charging For Internet: The Good News? Breakfast Is Often Free Funny PictureFree breakfast? Fairly likely. Free Internet? Less so, states a new survey from the American Hotel & Lodging Association and STR.

The biennial survey shows that 23% of U.S. properties among a sample group of more than 12,000 charge for in-room Internet, up 8 percentage points from 2008. Luxury properties are most likely to charge for the service (84%), while no “midscale” properties charged for Internet. It’s a fairly steep decline as one moves down the price scale, with 76% of upper upscale properties charging, compared to 26% of upper midscale and 18% of upscale hotels charging.

Along with this rise shows a jump in charges for fitness facilities – one in four hotels charge for these facilities, up from just over one in five in 2010.

Hotels are, however, more likely to offer free breakfast (79%), although an article from Business Travel News suggests that this shift is likely due to the re-organization of hotel type participating in the survey, writing that “[n]early all mid-tier hotels – 95% of upper midscale and 97% of midscale – offer free breakfast, as do about half of U.S. upscale hotels.”

The survey also shows that despite the increased push for hotels to become more tech-savvy, many developments, such as mobile check-in and use of mobile devices for room keys have had little adoption, at 3% and 1% respectively.

Lobby check-in kiosks are also becoming a thing of the past. Now only 7% of hotels use them, compared with 28% in 2008.

rsz5bottle2 2 Hotel News We Noted: August 17, 2012 Funny PictureGreetings, from warm and muggy Florida! As we stretch into the last weeks of summer break, we’ve got some cool hotels on tap to keep you full with your weekly dose of “Hotel News We Noted.”

As always, if you have a tip, trend or topical idea you’d like to tell us about, send us a note.

Coming Soon: Hotel Openings
Want the scoop on where your favorite hotels are heading? The Delano announced plans to build in Moscow, we’ll be reporting live on the Capella in Georgetown, opening in early 2013, the Weekapaug Inn, in tony Watch Hill, Rhode Island, is re-opening from a million renovation in October and QT Sydney, a new five-star design hotel in Australia, is coming September 17.

Branded Hotels: Ikea?
The budget furniture maker is primed to enter the hotel market in a big way. The Inter Ikea name will feature 100 budget-friendly hotels (they will not have the Scandanavian line’s famed flat-pack furniture), according to Reuters. The Inter Ikea brand already owns a few hotels, but this represents their first major move into the hospitality space. The first hotel will likely enter the market in Germany in 2014 and be run by a separate hotel operator.

Eco-Amenity: An In-House Bottling Plant at Shangri-La
We’ve heard of a lot of hotels going eco-friendly, but this is the first we’ve heard of an in-house bottling plant. Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa and Golden Sands Resort in Penang will see a reduction of approximately10,379 pounds of plastic drinking bottles per year through this new initiative. The complimentary drinking water will be packaged in 1.0-liter glass bottles and will replace the plastic mineral water bottles currently used. The resort is the first in Penang accorded this bottling license, and it will serve both carbonated and stilled water.

Hotel Packages: Le Divorce
Papers signed? Celebrate your single status with a three- to 30-day package at Kamalame Cay, a private island resort in the Bahamas. The package includes meals, a spa day and unlimited booze and cigarettes (okay, ew). For every three days on island, guests can choose from one activity from a special “Le Divorce Activities Menu,” including such items as spa treatments, fishing excursions and underwater adventures. Those booking this package can also fill out a “virtue and vice” form three weeks prior to arrival detailing favorite cocktail(s), preferred style of wine(s), favorite fruit(s), favorite candy or other “naughty” treats, favorite author(s), favorite musician(s), etc. Personalized “surprises” will then magically appear in a fun way throughout the stay. Rates start at 0 per night; those booking the full 30 days receive 20 percent off.

After 12: Booze News: Justin Clark of North Liberty, Iowa Blows a 0.627 During a DUI Breathalyzer Test

Posted on 17 August 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

TUVsZsc0Ekemrd4bcylF4Q2 After 12: Booze News: Justin Clark of North Liberty, Iowa Blows a 0.627 During a DUI Breathalyzer Test Funny Picture
Let’s put this in perspective: the legal limit for driving while intoxicated is a BAC of 0.08, meaning this guy had eight times the legal limit in his system. Furthermore, in Iowa state police academy curriculum, officers are taught that a person with a BAC of 0.40 are likely to be in a coma. This guy has 1.5 times the amount needed to kill a person, and he was still driving. Talk about holding your liquor!

Hotel News We Noted: August 10, 2012

rszpalazzoexteriorstart3 Hotel News We Noted: August 10, 2012 Funny PictureIt’s hot and sticky and, judging by the amount of traffic we’ve seen headed to the beaches, everyone is on vacation this week. Still, we truck along to bring you this week’s “Hotel News We Noted,” featuring the latest and greatest from the hospitality world.

As always, send news, notes and general complaints or well wishes via email.

App Awesomeness: The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas
The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas have finally grown wise to the idea that navigating their 16 million square foot resort and casino complex can sometimes be, well, a bit complicated. We’ve gotten lost more than once on the way from Barney’s to the blackjack table, and not just because we had a few complimentary drinks that fuzzed our non-existent sense of direction. A new VP Pocket Concierge app (available on Apple and Android both) mixes turn-by-turn directions inside the hotels with the ability to make reservations, enjoy Grazie rewards club perks and more. Useful – we wish more Vegas hotels offered this technology.

Fashionable Perk: Vivienne Tam Slippers from Hilton
Keep your feet looking fashion-forward when you visit Hilton Hotels this fall with a limited-edition slipper designed by Vivienne Tam for their Hilton Huanying program, offered at 70 of the brand’s properties in more than 20 countries. Guests of the program will get the slippers free, but you can also buy them online at HiltontoHome.com (use VTHILTON to save 20% through 9/30) or try to win them in a Twitter giveaway through @HiltonHotels. The blue slippers, which feature dragons, are pretty snazzy. Will you be getting a pair, or would you prefer to hold out for the Loubs below?

Hotel Openings: Fairmont Jaipur
Travelers headed to India now have another hotel option thanks to yesterday’s opening of the Fairmont Jaipur, the first of the brand’s properties in India. The 255-room hotel was designed to reflect a traditional Mughal palace. In keeping with Fairmont’s commitment to offer local experiences to guests, travelers to the hotel can enjoy elephant rides, village walks and more.

Fashion Love: Mandarin Oriental Washington DC Offers Brides Louboutin Shoes
Chances are, if you’re paying to host your wedding at the Mandarin Oriental, you know at least a thing or two about style and luxury. The brand’s DC property is sweetening the deal, however, by offering a ,000 credit towards the purchase of famed designer Christian Louboutin’s shoes for brides planning a wedding at the property. Not only do you get the iconic red soles, but you’ll also get a personal shopping experience at Neiman Marcus, where a Mandarin rep waits on you hand and foot (literally) offering champagne, treats and more. The cost? A mere ,000 or more for the wedding. A fun perk for sure, although we think we’d rather have a cheaper wedding and buy our own shoes!

We’re officially into the Dog Days of Summer and it seems like every resort we see is trying to promote a pet friendly package. Be sure to inquire if you want to travel with Fido or Fifi — many hotels offer pet-friendly policies for dogs under a certain size, and some, like Kimpton, even cater to the pampered pooch with special welcome amenities.

This week’s Hotel News We Noted full of both good news and sad, as it seems like most of the big openings and events will be happening later in the fall. Still, we’ve got a full slate of happenings for you, just down below.

As always, send us a message if you have questions, comments or tips!

Hotel Closing: The Ritz Paris
The video above is in tribute to the two-year closing of The Ritz Paris, an iconic property that closed this week as part of a two-year restoration. We love the cheeky video, which shows lights being turned off, maids undoing aprons, and ddust covers being placed on the furniture. We wish the hotel and its staff the best of luck during their hiatus.

Failbook: Sweet Relief for Your Facebook News Feed

Failbook: Sweet Relief for Your Facebook News Feed Funny Picture
You’re getting older, and so are your Facebook friends. As you grow into your 20s (even earlier, for some people), the apple-cheeked progeny of people you barely know will start pouring into your news feed like an organic-mattered tidal wave. There’s no stopping it. It’s nature. It’s life.

Luckily, you CAN hide it. A brilliant new browser extension for Chrome, Unbaby, will comb your news feed for keywords like “year old” and “cute” and take offending posts down. You can even replace baby pictures with pictures of Your Most Favorite Thing in the World: cats, bacon, M.C. Escher, the list goes on.

There’s been no backlash so far from would-be booster parents. Is this an extension that cruelly targets people who are rightfully proud of their newborn, or a welcome relief from oversharing?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re aware that this is the month of the Olympics – and we’ll be doing our due diligence by bringing you the best hotel news, packages and trend data over the next few weeks in this column and elsewhere. This week, however, we’re highlighting spots of summer with a slew of new hotel stay reviews, openings, trends and far-out amenities.

As always, if you have a comment, thought, or want to share details from a great hotel you’ve recently experienced, send us an email.

Now Open: Scrub Island
If it’s private island luxury you crave (who doesn’t?) try the newly opened, yet unfortunately named, Scrub Island Resort on the east end of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands (shown at top). As the first luxury resort built in the destination in more than 15 years, the hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Set on a private island and rugged cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, you’ll enjoy a choice of 52 rooms as well as two-, three-, and four-bedroom villas, a spa, restaurants, three private beaches and a 55-slip marina. Rates for a July stay start at 0 per night.

US News & World Report Ranks Best Vacations

3280396952fe01db693f US News & World Report Ranks Best Vacations Funny PictureIt’s time for summer vacation, and we’re pretty sure we could use a long week at the beach. Thanks to U.S. News & World Report, we now know the most statistically sound places to maximize our oh-so-precious vacation time, sorted by region.

The new rankings identify the top vacation spots based on a methodology that combines expert and consumer opinions. They reflect how strongly a destination is recommended by travel experts and U.S. News Travel website users.

According to the survey, Bali, Kauai and the Seychelles take the top awards for “Best Beaches” while Barcelona, Paris and Berlin rank on top for Best European Vacations. Within the U.S., Yellowstone, New York City and Washington, D.C., are the most coveted destinations.

In total, more than 200 destinations were considered in the current rankings, and this marks the first time the publication has ranked the “Best” list on a global scale.

Hotel News We Noted: July 20, 2012

Posted on 21 July 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

grandhotel Hotel News We Noted: July 20, 2012 Funny PictureGreetings from the sunny islands of the Bahamas! We’re visiting the famed Atlantis Resort this week for a wedding of a good friend, and will be excited to report back next week on our swim with the dolphins, boat trip to the Exumas and spa treatments.

But we couldn’t leave you without this week’s edition of “Hotel News We Noted,” where we track the latest and greatest hotel news, packages, trends and promotions you need to know now.

If you have questions, comments, concerns or tips, just email!

Hotels Coming Soon: SLS New York
We’ve told you about the opening of SLS South Beach, but now it seems that the boutique brand is headed to the Big Apple as well. In addition to hotels in California and a planned Las Vegas spot, the New York Post is reporting that a new hotel will open in 2013 on Park Avenue. Celebrity designer Philippe Stark will work with nightlife guru Sam Nazarian on the 190-room hotel, which should open in the second quarter of next year. Nazarian, an NYU grad, told the Post that he loves the city, even going so far as to speculate that there could soon be two or three New York properties in the portfolio. At least it looks like he’s picked a good location – the planned hotel is within blocks of popular properties like The Gansevoort Park Avenue, The Ace and the Eventi hotel.

Hotel Trend: Social Perks
We love getting things for free, and have talked before about how social media interaction with a hotel or brand can earn points, perks and recognition. Now MGM Resorts have jumped on the bandwagon. The hotel has partnered with Topguest to reward members of its M life program for sharing their adventures via social media. They can receive credit for linking their account, checking in on FourSquare or Facebook places, or for tweeting to or about the resort. Engagers can earn points towards status in the loyalty program (up to 30,000 per year) – a big number when one considers that the second-level tier of the program (Pearl) is only 25,000 credits per year.

Happy Birthday, Grand Hotel!
If there’s a place we’ve always wanted to visit, it’s Mackinac Island’s famed Grand Hotel. One of the great hotels of yesteryear, this property boasts the distinction of being pretty much the main business on this popular Michigan vacation spot. This year, the hotel is celebrating a big accomplishment – its 125th birthday. So join us in raising a glass to say congratulations. Fun fact for those of you who haven’t visited: Mackinac Island is one of the few places in the United States left that doesn’t permit cars; horse and buggy and bicycle are the primary modes of transportation.

Hotel Perk: A Hotel Room to Match Your Mood
Here’s a fun extra. At the new Pod 39 hotel in Murray Hill, guests can request one of three room color schemes to enhance their stay. Studies show that colors can affect your mood, and Pod designer, Vanessa Guilford, applies this concept to hotel design, giving guests yet another preference to enhance their stay. Guests can request a red room for “stimulation,” a teal room for “emotional balance, stability and controlling emotions” or a blue room to help one be productive and calm. Hey, we’re just happy that it’s affordable – rates start at per night in July for a pre-opening special (the hotel is putting its finishing touches together for a later summer grand reveal).

niyamamaldives Hotel News We Noted: July 6, 2012 Funny Picture

Greetings, friends. Here’s to hoping that everyone in a hotel tonight is there because they are enjoying an extended Fourth of July vacation, and not because they’re still without power from last weekend’s storms or Colorado’s devastating wildfires. It seems like the end of the world might be nigh after all – so this week, in addition to your standard Hotel News We Noted on openings, trends and new developments, we’ve got a special Mayan package at one of our favorite resorts.

If you have news, tips or comments, please feel free to drop us a line via email.

Resort We Want to Visit: NIYAMA Per AQUUM
Dying for a trip to the Maldives? Sure, so are we. If you suddenly find yourself on the other side of the world, be sure to check out NIYAMA, the area’s newest resort, featuring the world’s first underwater music club, a 24-hour spa, a coral adoption program, tribal cooking over hot rock grills and in-room delis for midnight snacking. Sounds amazing, right? If any of those perks aren’t your thing, the Per AQUUM brand also has a polo estate in Dubai and another property in the Maldives, Huvafen Fushi.

chl entrance794x386 Hotel News We Noted: July 29, 2012 Funny PictureGreetings from Evian, France, land of the famed water, where I’ve been scouting hotels and spas all week. As usual, in Hotel News We Noted, you’ll find the best news, notes and trends from the hotel world this week.

Have a story or a tip? Send it our way via email.

Hotel Promo: Social Media Day
Fairmont Hotels and Resorts are getting into Social Media Day, June 30, with a special promotion. Restaurants and lounges across the Fairmont brand are offering a complimentary “app” from 3 p.m. through closing, tomorrow, June 30. You can find the social updates on the hotel’s Twitter, Facebook and FourSquare pages. If you choose to dine, you’ll also receive a one-time 25 percent discount through August 31, 2012. We champion Fairmont for “going social” and wonder why more hotels aren’t playing along!

All Eyes on London: Celeb Spottings
We, along with the rest of the world, have our eye on London this summer, thanks to that little thing called the Olympics beginning next month. But two London hotels are getting a bit of an early boost. The luxe Corinthia Hotel had a most distinguished guest earlier this week in the Prince of Wales, who toured the hotel. A-List guests also included Rihanna, who unfortunately was evacuated from the hotel yesterday after a small fire broke out. You win some; you lose some, Corinthia! Our favorite Spice Girls also announced a new musical at the St. Pancras Renaissance, where they shot their debut music video, Wannabe.

Amnesty for All: The Waldorf=Astoria New York
The Waldorf=Astoria is seeing to take back its history by calling on past guests to return hotel items that may have secretly checked out when they did. Past guests are encouraged to return all items predating 1960 with no questions asked during the amnesty period running now through Sept. 15. During the amnesty period, the hotel’s staff will evaluate returned items, selecting the best to be displayed on the hotel’s Facebook page; top returned items will then be showcased in the lobby museum. Start searching for those teacups, spoons and bathrobes, ladies and gents!

Happy Birthday: Raffles
The Singapore-based Raffles chain is celebrating its 125th birthday this year. Congratulations to the famed hotel group, which now has sister properties in Paris, Dubai, Cambodia, the Seychelles, Beijing and the Holy City of Makkah. Openings are happening in Manila, Istanbul, Jakarta and Hainan in China, over the next two years.

cloister Hotel News We Noted: June 22, 2012 Funny PictureIt’s finally summer, and outside isn’t the only thing that’s warm in this week’s edition of Hotel News We Noted. Here, we explore some of the world’s most sizzling new hotels and promotions, as well as cool amenities that can keep you traveling in style.

As always, if you have a suggestion or a comment, feel free to email us.

Hotel Trends: U.S. Hotels Catering to Chinese Travelers
Chinese travel to the United States is up 36 percent over last year, to the tune of more than million. This article from the Seattle Times explored what that means for hotels. Chains like Marriott and Hilton have already rolled out special programs for tourists, while Starwood and The-Ritz Carlton have relocated managers to China to help them gain cultural awareness. Fairmont has just rolled out a new Chinese menu. Just one example includes the nation’s strict hierarchy – employees should not be placed on a higher floor than their boss, no matter the room type. Chinese guests are also not housed on floors with the number four, which sounds like the word for “death” in Mandarin – a strange request for a U.S. audience, but something that these tour groups have greatly appreciated. And, at the tune of .7 billion per year spent by the Chinese in the United States, or ,000 per traveler, hoteliers can’t afford not to take note.

Cool Perk: Leave the Workout Gear at Home, Thanks to Westin
Westin is making it easier than ever to stay fit on the road (and still avoid checked bag fees). For , guests can get an entire New Balance outfit – from a sports bra to shoes – delivered to their room as part of an exclusive gear-lending partnership with New Balance.

Money We Wish We Had: Larry Ellison Buys Lanai, Two Four Seasons
Oracle CEO and billionaire Larry Ellison has gone and done it again. This time, he bought Lana’i, one of Hawaii’s seven islands, which has not one but two Four Seasons Resorts. Purchased are the 236-room Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay and the 102-room Four Seasons Resort Lana’i, The Lodge at Koele. We didn’t realize this was even possible, but apparently it is – he purchased the island to the tune of 0 or 0 million from David Murdock, another billionaire.

Unique Amenity: An On-Site Bagpiper
Guests at Sea Island’s (image of their luxe property The Cloister above) can relax after a day of shooting school or playing one of the resort’s three championship golf courses and enjoy the sounds of the resort’s resident bagpiper, who plays on the golf course every day at sundown. Shockingly, this isn’t the only U.S. hotel to offer the amenity – the Inn at Spanish Bay near Pebble Beach has the same thing. Who would have thought?

Soon-to-Open: Hotel BPM, Brooklyn
It’s no shock to us that Brooklyn will be the home base for the boutique Hotel BPM, or Hotel Beats Per Minute in Prospect Park. The hotel, opening August 1, has one cool program we’re keeping an eye on – guests can request one song that will be played throughout the hotel sound system at some point during their stay. At just 9 a night for the opening rate, it might be worth it to go and request something terrible like “Ice Ice Baby” or country music just to see the reaction of other guests. Sorry, we’re terrible.
