Financial pros use a number of tools to rank the best places to live, work and play, but this new infographic from Travelbite uses the average price of a cup of coffee to determine where you can best spend your hard-earned dollars on vacation. We’re all about Barcelona and Prague, but we’re not sure why it’s more expensive to score your java in Copenhagen than in, say, Paris or London.

Escorted Travel Adds Value With Private Experience

ultimateservicecontent 0001 Escorted Travel Adds Value With Private Experience Funny PictureWhen travel planning calls for first-class accommodations, airfare, and guidance along the way, travelers often use a travel agent to help. Commonly accepted advice is to use one that specializes in the method of travel or destination you choose. Better yet, use one that offers escorted tours for an immersive experience like no other.

In China and Asia, Wendy Wu Concierge is a premium service offering luxury vacations custom built by destination specialists and the traveler to create a personal and unique experience.

“As one of the world’s leading specialists in travel to China and Asia, we’ll listen to every ambition and aspiration to provide a private experience that meets specific interests,” says Wendy Wu Concierge on their web site.

Going first-class all the way has more benefits than one might imagine including:

  • Partnering with only the finest hotels, like Peninsula, Shangri-La properties, St. Regis and Banyan Tree hotels, ensures the highest levels of comfort and service.
  • Insider access includes a diplomatic airport transfer where clients are welcomed at the arrival gate with baggage assistance and fast-track service through immigration and customs.
  • A global partnership with Cathay Pacific with direct service from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York, to Hong Kong with onward connections to over 18 cities across China with its sister airline Dragonair.
  • When travel calls for a cruise, Wu uses 124 passenger Yangzi Explorer, ideally equipped to host special groups.

Cruise Lines Court New Yorkers With More Ships, Better Value

Posted on 20 April 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

aaa2888925384bc310b4ac2 0001 Cruise Lines Court New Yorkers With More Ships, Better Value Funny PictureNew Yorkers and most of the upper east coast of the United States have had few cruise ships to choose from. Traditionally, cruise lines sailed most of their ships from warmer, southern ports, which added the cost of a flight to a cruise vacation package too. Now, cruise lines are positioning more ships from upper east coast ports with a special focus on the New York market. The end result is, and will continue to be, more choices, better pricing and the best value ever to New Yorkers.

Norwegian Cruise Lines‘ new 4,000-passenger ship, Norwegian Breakaway, will sail from her homeport of New York City to the Bahamas, Florida, and the Caribbean for her inaugural winter season in 2013. That adds one more drive-to-the-port option for cruise passengers in the often under-served New York market.

“Norwegian Breakaway is one of the most highly anticipated new ships and has seen great demand for her summer sailings to Bermuda,” Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan told TravelDailyNews. “We are also excited to announce that the ship will stop at our newly enhanced private island, Great Stirrup Cay, offering an exclusive beach experience.”

Embarking on seven- to twelve day cruises to the Bahamas and Florida from October 2013 to April 2014, the line is taking in ports including Nassau, Great Stirrup Cay, Orlando and Port Canaveral. Two 12-day Southern Caribbean voyages and two “Weekend Escape” cruises in January 2014 are also scheduled with the 12-day itinerary incorporating visits to San Juan, St Thomas, Philipsburg, Castries, Bridgetown and Basseterre.

As the largest ship to homeport year-round in New York City, Norwegian Breakaway is expected to bring 140,000 additional embarking passengers into New York City over two years creating an estimated million in direct spending.

In another move, Carnival Miracle, once a seasonal ship, started sailing year-round from New York this month, marking the line’s first year-round sailings from that port.

New Airline’s All-You-Can-Fly Offer A Better Value Than Earlier Versions

Posted on 07 April 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

76338785bec35fca36 0001 New Airlines All You Can Fly Offer A Better Value Than Earlier Versions Funny PictureIn a modified version of JetBlue’s 2009 All You Can Fly program, a team of California brothers plans to launch Surf Air, an airline to serve executives and others willing to pay a monthly membership fee for unlimited travel up and down the west coast.

“Surf Air will allow busy travelers to book a stress-free trip without price-comparison shopping – maybe even an hour before departure,” said Wade Eyerly, CEO and Founder of Surf Air and previously an intelligence officer/aide to former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Teaming with brother David Eyerly, a former manager of the Dallas Fort-Worth airport for Frontier Airlines, the Surf Air plan is to sign on 500 Founding Members for its first launch market servicing Palo Alto, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles for as low as 0 a month.

That’s a bit more than previous versions of the plan but Surf Air members get more too.

JetBlue’s All You Can Jet plan charged 9 for a month of unlimited travel.

Surf Air members get unlimited travel but will also enjoy an on-site concierge service, first-class luxury on mid-sized executive aircraft, 30-second booking and cancellations, travel to and from uncontested regional airports, no lines and no extra fees.

Business Travel On The Rise With Focus On Personal Value

Posted on 04 April 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

3940323879e6c748963 0001 Business Travel On The Rise With Focus On Personal Value Funny PictureResults from the fourth annual Embassy Suites Business Travel Survey show that while the recovering economy is still holding down the number of business trips taken, those who do travel are mixing business with pleasure more often than not. The report also highlights a keen interest in value – perhaps a lesson learned from tough times in the recent past.

“This year’s survey shows us that while people are traveling more for business; those guests want to get more – literally – out of every trip,” said John Lee, vice president, brand marketing for Embassy Suites Hotels in a release.

Noting the value of “face time” with customers, business travelers surveyed reported cutbacks on travel due to the economy down ten percent less than last year. Rather than skipping travel to meet customers face to face, some business travelers are cutting back on other travel expenses like meals and incidentals. The survey indicates that overall, business travelers are looking for better value in the hotels they use.

“Despite all the great technological advances, there is still no substitute for meeting someone in person,” says Cynthia Good, CEO & founding editor of Little PINK Book, a leading digital platform for businesswomen.

Going a step further on maximizing value, business travelers are getting more into bleisure travel by extending their business stay for personal travel time. Of those surveyed, 61 percent reported an average of three additional days added on to business trips for personal reasons.

Cruise Vacation Shore Excursions: A Better Value With New Service

Posted on 03 April 2012 by Funny Picture Daily

shore excursion 0001 Cruise Vacation Shore Excursions: A Better Value With New Service Funny PictureCruise vacations may have an all-inclusive nature but, as anyone who has sailed knows, the cruise fare paid far from covers everything. Incidental, but nearly mandatory, expenses like gratuities, soft drinks or alcoholic beverages and transfer services to and from the ship can add up fast. One part of it all that can make or break a cruise vacation experience is shore excursions — what we do off the ship. A new service now offers remarkable savings on the same or better tours than those offered by the cruise line.

Going live this week, Viator Shore Excursions offers more than 500 shore excursions in over 80 of the most popular ports around the globe, including new destinations Juneau, Monaco and Mykonos.

“The new Viator Shore Excursion platform builds on the increasing popularity of independent shore excursion bookings on Viator.com,” Barrie Seidenberg, CEO and president of Viator told Gadling. “We’ve taken our great inventory and added innovative technology to create the new user experience and give cruise passengers direct access to the best excursions in their ports of call to help them make the most of their time and money in every port.”

Viking horde highlights the value of responsible metal detectoring

Posted on 17 December 2011 by Funny Picture Daily

800px silverdalehoardgroupshot Viking horde highlights the value of responsible metal detectoring Funny Picture
When I used to work as an archaeologist, I heard a lot of bad-mouthing about metal detectorists. These guys scan the ground for coins and other metal objects. Most of the time they only find a few old pennies. It’s when they discover something of historic value that some archaeologists get grumpy. Many archaeologists don’t trust metal detectorists, saying they disturb ancient sites and pocket their findings.

This week’s discovery of a Viking horde of silver in England shows how responsible metal detectorists, far from being nosy snoopers into the sacred soil of archaeology, can actually help us learn more about the past.

The horde, found near the appropriately named village of Silverdale, Lancashire, includes silver brooches, coins, arm-rings, and ingots. There are 201 pieces in all, weighing more than two pounds, and they were buried around 900 AD. While artistic value of the jewelry is priceless, it’s one of the coins that tells us something really significant. It’s of a type never before seen and bears the inscription AIRDECONUT which may represent the Scandinavian name Harthacnut. There’s a famous Viking king by that name, but he lived a century later and his coins look different, so this appears to be a previously unknown Viking king.

Interestingly, the other side reads DNS (Dominus) REX, with the letters arranged in the form of a cross. This was a period when Vikings were beginning to abandoned the old gods like Thor and Odin and turn to Christianity. Also in the horde was a fake silver coin made from copper with a thin silver wash, and Islamic coins from the Middle East.

This isn’t the first time a metal detectorist has found evidence for an unknown ruler. Back in 2004, a man using a metal detector uncovered a Roman silver coin in Oxfordshire dating to 271 AD and bearing the face of Emperor Domitianus II. This military officer had been garrisoned in Britain and took advantage of the chaotic political situation to proclaim himself emperor. He minted some coins to celebrate the occasion but his rule only lasted at most for a few weeks. The coin was part of a horde of about 5,000 coins. This coin is now on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

In both cases, the lucky guys did the right (and legal) thing–they reported their finds to the proper authorities. Laws governing such finds differ from country to country, but it’s always important to report anything you find that may be of historical significance. You never know, you might have discovered a new king.
